Cookie Books

Did you watch the video? Yes, there truly is a science behind the baking of cookies (not just the desire for something sweet to eat, though let’s say that that desire is what drives the science of cookie – after all, if there wasn’t the drive to bake cookies, there wouldn’t be such a thing as a cookie! I’m mean, they don’t grow on trees, you know).
Anywho, this post is in honor of National Cookie Day (and yes, today marks the first time that I have ever heard of this event)! Naturally, being such the baking enthusiast that I am, I couldn’t help but delve into the world of cookies today – albeit by hitting the books and some TEDEd videos, not the bakery. And I found some surprising finds from a post at the New York Public Library. I encourage you to delve into this post and the books, and, well, the cookies made in honor of them.
Not edible till baked, these are essentially literary cookies! Red Velvet SINamon Icing Cookies for Nathanial Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter, Coconut Thumbprints with Sea Salted Caramel for Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea, not to mention those Rum Balls for Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary. For me, I have my eye on those Mexican Chocolate Cookies that tie into Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate. What about you? What book do you think could have a matching cookie?
How about, Carrot Cake Cookies for Anne of Green Gables? Or Glazed Apple Cookies for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? The possibilities seem endless!
I think I need to get into the kitchen soon, this time with my favorite novel (instead of a cookbook) for assistance. Plus, I’ll bear in mind this additions to my cookies: Turn the heat up to 390 degrees Fahrenheit – I’ll like my cookies to be a little tan. Yes indeed, science (and books) can indeed be sweet.
